L'ara hyacinthe - Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus - a une espérance de vie importante pour un oiseau puisqu'elle atteint, en moyenne, les 60 ans.

Il devient adulte vers 5 ans mais ce n'est qu'à partir de 10 ans qu'il commence à se reproduire.

Si un couple d'aras hyacinthes est uni pour la vie, celle-ci n'est pas si simple.

Pour s'alimenter, il lui faudra des noix à la coque extrêmement dure que l'on trouve au Brésil. Son bec, très, très puissant, est le seul à pouvoir les briser  Ces noix ont la particularité d'être très, très grasse. Et cet ara peut le digérer sans problème de santé. Tant mieux pour lui.

Pour se reproduire, il lui faudra un très grand arbre. Ces grands arbres sont les seuls à pouvoir offrir une cavité assez grande pour contenir le nid.

Un si grand oiseau (100 cm) ne pond que 2 œufs. Il faudra beaucoup de chance pour qu'au moins un poussin survive jusqu'à son émancipation. Le développement du poussin prend beaucoup de temps.

Et le temps est long puisqu'il lui faudra 2 ans pour devenir indépendant. C'est pourquoi ces perroquets ne nichent que tous les 2 ans.

Bien sûr, les problèmes sont nombreux pour ce couple. À commencer par la disparition progressive des grands arbres. Les plus recherchés par l'industrie du meuble et de l'habitat.
