Le plus petit oiseau au monde est le colibri-abeille. Le colibri-abeille est à peine plus gros qu'un bourdon avec lequel il est souvent confondu. Le mâle est un peu plus petit que la femelle ne mesurant que 5.5 centimètres de long et pesant seulement 1.95 grammes . En comparaison, le colibri géant ( Patagona gigas ) que l'on retrouve dans les Andes mesure environ 21 centimètres et pèse 20 grammes, si bien que le colibri-abeille peut se percher sur le bec du colibri géant des Andes.

Le nom scientifique du colibri-abeille est Mellisuga helenae et colibri d'Hélène en français. Ce nom lui a été donné en l'honneur d'Hélène Booth, l'épouse d'un ami de Juan Gundlach ( 1810-1896 ), célèbre naturaliste allemand qui a séjourné pendant plusieurs années à Cuba et qui a écrit le premier livre important sur les oiseaux de l'île ( Ornitología Cubana ). Les cubains préfèrent l'appeler zunzuncito, mot espagnol qui veut dire petit zunzun. Zunzun est une onomatopée imitant le bruit fait par le battement très rapide des ailes du colibri. Saviez-vous que le battement des ailes du colibri se fait à une vitesse de 80 battements d'ailes par seconde ?

Le colibri-abeille est une espèce d'oiseau endémique à Cuba, c'est-à-dire qu'elle n'existe qu'à Cuba et nulle part ailleurs. Cuba est vraiment le royaume du plus petit monde puisque c'est là aussi que l'on retrouve la plus petite grenouille au monde ( Sminthillus limbatus ) ainsi que la plus petite chauve-souris papillon au monde ( Natalus lepidus ).

The smallest bird in the world is the Bee-Hummingbird. The Bee-Hummingbird is only slightly larger than a bumblebee with which it is often confused. The male is slightly smaller than the female, measuring only 5.5 centimetres long and weighing only 1.95 grams. In comparison, the giant hummingbird (Patagona gigas) found in the Andes is about 21 centimetres long and weighs 20 grams, so that the hummingbird can perch on the beak of the giant hummingbird.

The scientific name of the Bee-Hummingbird is  Mellisuga helenae. This name was given to him in honour of Helen Booth, the wife of a friend of Juan Gundlach ( 1810-1896 ), a famous German naturalist who spent several years in Cuba and who wrote the first important book on the birds of the island ( Ornitología Cubana ). Cubans prefer to call it zunzuncito, a Spanish word that means small zunzun. Zunzun is an onomatopoeia imitating the noise made by the very fast flapping of the hummingbird’s wings. Did you know that the hummingbird’s wings flap at 80 flapping wings per second?

The Bee-Hummingbird is a species of bird endemic to Cuba, that is, it exists only in Cuba and nowhere else. Cuba is really the kingdom of the smallest world since it is also home to the smallest frog in the world ( Sminthillus limbatus ) and the smallest butterfly bat in the world ( Natalus Lepidus ).
