Le rougegorge familier - Erithacus rubecula - est un oiseau territorial.

Les limites de son territoire sont assez bien marquées. C'est par de fréquentes querelles entre voisins que chacun pose le contour de son domaine. Les lieux de duels font ainsi office de limite.

Le plastron rouge que porte chaque rougegorge familier a pour fonction première de mettre un "feu rouge" à celui qui le voit. Et, en présence d'un autre rougegorge familier, le légitime propriétaire, quant à lui, voit rouge !.

Le chant du rougegorge est assez mélodieux. Nous n'avons pas l'impression, en l'écoutant, qu'il s'agit tout simplement d'un chant de guerre. Toujours ce besoin de marquer son territoire.

Il chante toute l'année. La mue et la migration (pour les oiseaux venant de l'Europe du Nord) sont les seuls moments où il se montre un peu plus silencieux.

Si chez beaucoup d'espèces d'oiseaux  le mâle est le seul à chanter, chez le rougegorge familier, la femelle chante aussi. Ce qui est plutôt rare. Il y a également une autre particularité chez ce rougegorge. La défense du territoire incombe le plus souvent au mâle. Chez le rougegorge familier, la femelle défend aussi âprement un territoire notamment en hiver.

The European Robin - Erithacus rubecula - is a territorial bird.

The boundaries of its territory are rather well marked. It is by frequent quarrels between neighbors that each lays the outline of his domain. The places of duels thus act as a limit.

The primary function of the orange breast worn by each European Robin is to set a "red light" on those who see it. And, in the presence of another Robin, the rightful owner, meanwhile, sees red!.

The song of the European Robin is quite melodious. When we listen to it, we do not feel that it is simply a war song. Always this need to mark its territory.

He sings all year. Moulting and migration (for birds from Northern Europe) are the only moments when it is a little quieter.

If in many bird species the male is the only one to sing, in the European Robin, the female also sings. This is rather rare. There is also another peculiarity in this European Robin. The defense of the territory is usually the responsibility of the male. In the European Robin, the female also strongly defends a territory especially in winter.
